After all the rain in Cape Town over the last couple of days/weeks I thought a change of scenery is warranted. This is a photo taken early this morning from my balcony of the Hottentots Mountains.
Although you cannot see it, there is snow on the mountains.

Follow-up on my previous pothole post. Here is the dreaded pothole … almost the size of the Kimberley Groot Gat. (Groot Gat is big hole for my overseas visitors)
Why, oh why has my car got 17 inch low profile tires that no other car uses. R1300.00 for one tire. I am embarking on claiming all the costs back from the City of Cape Town who is responsible for keeping our roads in a decent condition. Any advice how to go about this and who to send the bill to will be much appreciated.

As I type this I am as mad as hell. Roads in South Africa is not the best and with all the rain that we had in the Cape, meant that potholes is showing up in places you least expect them. Earlier today I took a side road to the shop around the corner and there was a piece of road under water on my side of the road. I had to go through the water since another car was coming from the front. Unknown to me there was a big pothole hidden under the water. I went through the hole at about 40km/h.
Front right tire got a major cut in it and deflated immediately. I also notice that the back left has a bubble in it. Will have to pop into the tire place tomorrow morning before work and replace the one and have the others checked out. As far as I can determine it is only the tires that took damage but even that is going to put me back a couple of Rand.
This just shows how bad the condition of our roads in this country is. Just a bit more than normal rain and the roads are full of potholes.

We knew this was in the making but Quickr has now been officially announced by IBM … the Quickr Blog has all the details. The date for General Availability is 29 June 2007 which happen to be the same date Lotus Connections will be available.
So what is Lotus Quickr .. I quote
an open standards-based team collaboration tool that helps teams inside and outside the company firewall easily and effectively work together across geographies, working styles and operating systems.
Lotus Quickr provides a rich set of team collaboration capabilities, including blogs, wikis and team space templates supporting a variety of business processes to get a collaboration project up and running quickly.
Now I just need to get my hand on using these tools.

Thanks to Deon and Pieter from Clickatell, I was invited to the rugby game yesterday between South Africa and Australia.
I was picked up at home and then again dropped off back at home, thanks Deon for being the taxi driver. Met some great guys, Deon, Christo (he started 20Twenty bank and is now into Hotels), Andre and Arthur — was good to meet you guys. Arrived at Groote Schuur High School ground around 1pm where a great lunch was served and lots of beers consumed. Werner Greeff was the guest speaker .. think he should rather stay at playing rugby/golf than speaking 🙂
Around 2:30 we made our way across to the stadium and took our seats just in time for the teams taking to the field. What a great game of rugby. Nerve raking for the last 10 minutes or so but hey we won and that is what counts. Think we need to do better next week against the All Blacks if we want to win again. I tend to forget how much better it is to be part of 50000 people at the game rather than to watch it on TV. Yes, you have a better view of the close up game on TV but nothing beat 50000 cheering fans.
After the game we bumped and pushed our way out of the stadium back to the hospitality tent for some celebrating beers and dinner. There were some lucky draws and a fellow table guest won a hospitality package to the South African/New Zealand cricket game at Newlands in November.

One of the RSS feeds that show up in my feed reader is of Ajax Magazine. One of the feeds was on Synthasite, developed in Cape Town, South Africa.
It is good to see work done in South Africa gets mentioned on prominent international sites and being tested by big companies like Amazon.
Synthasite is also being tested on
Amazon’s Elastic Compute Cloud, which in theory allows it to be
infinitely scalable, although accounts will initially be limited.
I have not had a look at Synthasite yet but will give it a test and see how it performs.
Well done to Vinny and the team .. keep up the good work.

Today is the day we all become Sharks and Bulls supporters. Even if you are a Sharks or Bulls supporter only I suggest for only today you cheer for both teams. You can go back to your home team when the Sharks and Bulls play one another next week. Hey I am a South African and have to be optimistic that both the Sharks and Bulls are going to win.
And just to be clear, my team is watching from the sidelines preparing for the Currie Cup.
And if anyone reading this have no idea what I am talking about you are clearly either not a South African and/or a rugby fan.
Life is great when one can have great coffee (Vida e Caffe) in an open air coffee shop, 3G wireless connectivity to do some last minute work before work tomorrow and listen to all the chatter of people relaxing on this public holiday.
And do not forget the wonders of camera cellphones … this picture was taken with my Nokia N80 with a 3MP camera.
Yes, I am writing this blog entry as I sit having coffee, taking the picture, uploading it to Flickr, updating my blog, all via 3G wireless.
